Tribute & Message From The Family

Joseph M. Zahuranec Jr. "Big Joe", 87 of Upper Pottsgrove formerly of Jeffersonville, died on Saturday April 8, 2017 just shy of his 88th birthday at Einstein Montgomery Hospital.

He was born on April 11, 1929 at Montgomery Hospital. Joseph was the son of the late Joseph M. Zahuranec Sr. and Veronica Zahuranec (nee Luther).
Joseph graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1947. He then joined the United Stated Navy in which he served his country from 1948-1952. Joe served in the United States Naval Air Reserve from 1952-1976 as a Chief Petty Officer at the Naval Air Reserve Station in Willow Grove, PA in the Fighter Transport Squadrons Division. He was employed at Norris Iron Works located in Bridgeport, PA as a sheet metal worker for 35 years. After the closing of Norris Iron Works, he worked for Hale Fire Pump located in Conshohocken for 8 years. Joseph retired in 1994.

He was a long time member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish where he also served as an usher. He was a member of the Shopmens Local #502, Naval Enlisted Reserve Association, the American Legion Post 0901, and a member of the King of Prussia Fire House. Big Joe was a strong quiet man that would light up a room with his smile. He had a passion for reading and current events as well as history. He also loved to swim. He was the "unofficial" town crier, announcing who was coming up the walkway to visit.

Joseph is survived by his wife Toni Zahuranec (nee St. Angelo), 2 sons Michael (Cindy), Steve, and his daughter Tammy Peale (Brian) and daughter-in-law Peggy Carson, 8 grandchildren; Michael Jr., Rebecca, Nathan (Andrea), Steve Jr. (Christina), Christopher (Megan), Maggie (Bryan), Jessica and Lauren Buckley, 9 great-grandchildren; Steven, Daniel, Sabrina, Deanna, Jacob, Olivia, Saffron, Donovan and Lucia, and sister-in-law Joanie Schaffer. Joseph also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and Godchildren. Joseph is predeceased by his first wife Margaret Mary Zahuranec (nee Schaffer), parents Joseph and Veronica Zahuranec, two sisters Dorothy Burke and Midge Pastva.
