Tribute & Message From The Family

Dolores Marie McKenna passed away on May 4, born February 12, 1940. She grew up in Port Carbon, PA where she attended St. Stephen's Elementary School and then Nativity High School in Pottsville. A graduate of Millersville University, she taught for almost 4 decades at Tamaqua Elementary School, while living in Pottsville for most of her adult life. As a regular visitor to her sister Rosemary in Arizona, Dolores developed an abiding interest in the Navajo people and culture and took a sabbatical to teach on the Navajo Reservation, fulfilling a dream of a lifetime. Dolores spent the last years of her life living with her niece laurel Raczka in Philadelphia where she enjoyed attending arts and culture events.

She is survived by a brother Joseph McKenna of Pottsville; her sisters Georgene Selesky of Stroudsburg, PA; and Lenore Lorenc of Port Carbon, as well as a large extended family who will miss her very much. Dolores service will be private at the request of her family.

When Dolores heard my class of elementary students was studying Native Americans, she mailed me a box of books, Navajo crafts, and photos to share with them. I remember how excited the children were as we took each treasure from the carton and examined the jewelry, weavings, and photos of Navajo families that Dolores came to know through her teaching. Her legacy extends from Arizona to a little school in upstate New York and beyond. Such a lively, lovely person! Heartfelt condolences and prayers for all her family.

I taught with Dodo for many years in Tamagua , Pa. I. Was saddened by the news of her passing. When you were around her you felt alive. She embraced the world with vigor and loved to party. She leaves behind so many fond memories. Will miss you deeply. Love and sympathy
