Tribute & Message From The Family

John ( Francis) Joseph McConnell of Philadelphia, PA passed away January 23rd of a COVID related illness. He was 93 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Mary. He is survived by his 6 children, John (Lisa), Mary Harrington (Joseph), William, Margaret McCloskey (Edward), James and Claire; his 5 grandchildren, Hannah McConnell, Sara and Erin Harrington and Kevin and Justin McCloskey and his niece Patricia Anderson.
A longtime resident of Philadelphia, John grew up in the Fairmount section. He began working for the Philadelphia Bulletin in 1944 as a copy boy, and remained there for over 37 years, rising to the position of Composing Room Superintendent at the time of the paper's closing. He then moved to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he worked as a system analyst until his retirement in 1994.
In retirement he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He was an avid home handyman and spent much of his free time in his basement workshop. He was also an enthusiastic photographer. He had an inquisitive mind and enjoyed solving problems. He loved dogs and the Phillies, and hot coffee, preferably served to him with a dessert. Mostly he was devoted to his wife and family.
The family is deferring services at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society ( PAWS) or a charity of your choice.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I was so saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. I remember both your parents well from taking care of them as their primary care physician until shortly before my retirement in April 2019 when it became too difficult for them to come to the office. Your Dad was the kindest of people, soft spoken but firm in character. His devotion to your Mother was remarkable and truly inspiring. He was engaged and engaging, had this dry sense of humor and it was always a pleasure talking with him. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I will remember both your parents fondly.
