Tribute & Message From The Family

Benzina Coleman (Mom, Bennie, Grandmom and Mother Coleman) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the baby daughter of the late Benjamin Gerideau and the late Lucille Jones. Benzina was preceded in death by her eldest biological sister Kathleen Gerideau-Carter in March of 1948. Benzina was educated in the Charleston school system. Arithmetic was one of her favorite subjects of education. Athletically, she dominated the sport of baseball, holding the positions of outfielder, pitcher and first baseman.

Benzina was very mature at a young age and was given many responsibilities. Due to the ill health of her family members, Benzina's education was cut short as she took care of her step mother and uncle along with raising her step sisters and brothers. After the passing of her family members, Benzina pursued the career of housekeeping and care giver full time.

In 1954, she married Morris Bussie, and out of that union are the eldest children: Laura Johnson, Benjamin Bussie and Morris Bussie Jr. Then in 1959, she met Ronald Coleman and from that union were daughters Rhonda Coleman and Kathleen Smith (Robert) and her stepson, Ronald Dorsey..
Benzina began her relationship with Christ when she became a member of Second Macedonia Baptist Church in 1982. She later joined Faith Tabernacle Church of the Living God. She served on the Usher Board, the Ward Ensemble, the Mass Choir, the Missionary Board and also began the first Beautification Committee at Faith Tabernacle. Benzina was baptized on November 17, 1987 and from there excepted Christ as her personal savior.

Her most memorable moments she would always say was to be employed with a sixth grade education, purchasing her first car at age 56, her surprised 80th birthday celebration, vacationing in Wildwood and taking that breathtaking trip to Hawaii. Her southern style of cooking was unique with a pinch of this and a dash of that along with her baker skills which was off the chart. She was an avid gardener, seamstress, and interior designer, quiet as kept.
Her legacy of love leaves to cherish her sons: Benjamin, Morris, stepson Ronald and her daughters: Laura, Rhonda, Kathleen, daughter in Christ Jean Polk, grandchildren: Benzina (BeBe), Hassan, Brian, Morris, Marty(Shayla), Michael, Benjamin (BJ), Christina (Robert), Antoinette, Robert (Michelle), Devin, LaRae, greatgrands and great-greatgrands, with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to Benzina's Life Celebration on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. followed by her funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Tabernacle Church of the Living God, 553 Spruce St, Camden, NJ 08103.
