Tribute & Message From The Family

Michael S. Beck passed away on January 31, 2022. He was 80 years old. Michael was born in Philadelphia to Mary and Michael J. Beck. He is survived by his son, William "Bill" Beck (Robyn); grandchildren, Ashley Beck (Daulton), and William Beck, Jr.; and sister, Mary Dorgan (William).

Growing up, Mike was a baseball player in high school and a very good pitcher. He enlisted in the army at 17. While at Fort Dix he had a brush with Elvis Presley. He was in the infantry as a machine gunner. After the Army he returned to Philadelphia where he went to work at the Bulletin paper then to Link Belt (FMC) as a millwright. He met Joanne Chaykin who he later married. Mike was a father to Bill and guided him playing football and baseball. In 1983 Mike took a job with the Philadelphia Fire Department as a Maintenance Supervisor. In 1988 the apple of his eye, his granddaughter, Ashley, was born to Bill and Robyn. Mike became the doting Grandfather. In 1991, Mike became a Grandfather for the second time welcoming William Jr. to the family. In 1998 Mike lost the love of his life Joanne to cancer. In 2005 he retired from the Fire Department and enjoyed his retirement having a beer and sunbathing, In August of 2021 Mike was ecstatic to have Ashley become engaged to Daulton Brady.

Mike loved dogs and almost always had at least one in his life. From Heidi to Sheba then Bill brought Thor home. While living with Bill and Robyn he enjoyed living with dogs Jesse, Max, Gunny and Gracie. Gunny spent most of his time hanging around Mike. In later years Mike welcomed Keno (Will's dog, a German Shepherd) and Loki (Ashley's dog, a black lab mix).

Mike was a three -time survivor of bouts with cancer affecting his mouth, throat and lung but that never stopped him. Mike would still make his usual rounds to the YMCA for his aquatic exercise in the morning, then to Dunkin Donuts for coffee and the paper.

Mike was extremely proud that Bill, Ashley and Will all have careers in Law enforcement. Bill and Will in the Philadelphia Police Department where Will is assigned to the 25th District and Bill to police academy as an instructor after 20 years in narcotics. Ashely went to Septa where she worked hard to become a member of their SORT team. In 2022, Mike saw Ashley take jobs in Tullytown and Bristol Borough as a Police officer.

Condolence & Memory Journal

To the Beck Family... I am so very sorry for your loss of Mike. I only knew him for a short time and not that well. However, we were water exercise buddies at the "Y' AND shared the shallow end together for our routines. Mike was very serious about his water exercise routine and very rarely missed a day. He has been remembered fondly by many members and employees at the "Y". I will miss him in 'our' end of the pool. Susan Eckert
