Tribute & Message From The Family

Winifred Sexton West passed peacefully on March 1, 2022. Her son-in-law and granddaughter Jennifer were present. She was 92.

Winnie was born in New York City to Joseph and Mary Winifred Sexton. She grew up in the City and Pelham, NY. Majoring in French at Bryn Mawr College, Winnie spent her junior year living and studying in Paris, just five years after World War II.

Winnie spent her professional life working as an editor and writer. She worked for the President of New York University writing and editing speeches, and for a range of publishing houses, the Educational Testing Service, and Merck Pharmaceuticals. In addition, she served as the editor of the demographic journal Population Index, published by Princeton University.

A single parent and working woman in New York City and Princeton, Winnie balanced her professional work, parenthood, and service to the community at a time before many American women worked full-time while raising a family. Winnie faithfully volunteered at Planned Parenthood and helped run a highly productive chapter of the Bryn Mawr Alumni Association that operated a used bookstore and held an annual book sale that occupied an entire hockey rink. In retirement, she assisted in a first-grade classroom at Newtown Friends School and Meals on Wheels.

Winnie will be remembered for the respect and kindness she showed to each person she met. She was an excellent listener and cared deeply about the people she encountered. She loved to read, travel, listen to music, seek out fine art, and discuss important issues. She was an excellent cook. She loved and became a student of fireflies, seeking every opportunity to see them and learn more about them.

Winnie was predeceased by her daughter Prudence Haines, brother Mark Sexton, and husbands A. Wyman Procter and Robert E. West. She is survived by her son-in-law Bruce Haines, stepsons Rodney and Richard West, grandchildren Jennifer Haines, Samuel Haines, Nicholas West, and Eliza West, sister-in-law Marie Sexton, and nephews Mark, Adam, and James Sexton.

Please make memorial contributions to the Pennswood Foundation, 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Road, Newtown, PA 18940, or to Planned Parenthood.
