Father Wetzel attended St. Timothy Grade School and graduated from Father Judge High School in 1977. Following graduation from Fr. He received a certificate in Pastoral Ministry from De Sales University in 1982 and received his Hospital Chaplaincy Certification from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in 1987. From 1982 – 1985, he served as Pastoral Associate at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware and Chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania from 1985 – 1986.

In 1996, he resumed studies in Graduate Theology and was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate on May 11, 1996. He served as a Deacon at St. Cecilia Parish in Fort Myers, Florida from 1996 – 1997 and from 1997 – 2001 at St. Joachim Parish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From 2001 – 2003, Fr. With the closing of St. Joachim, Father Wetzel was able to refocus his ministry with the Philadelphia Police. In January of 2014, Father Wetzel helped to found the Michael the Archangel Ministry Program FOP Lodge #5 where he assumed the role of full-time Chaplain to 14,000 active and retired Philadelphia Police and their families.
