Obituary for Barbara Ann Cooke Brashear

November 5, 1922 - July 24, 2016
Newtown, Pennsylvania | Age 93

Barbara Ann Cooke Brashear, age 93, died at Chandler Hall on Sunday, July 24, 2016 in Newtown, PA, her birthplace, November 5, 1922.

The daughter of the late Robert L. and Elsie Cooke (Lear). She attended Ursinus College where she met David Brashear, a Navy V-12 pre-med student. She studied English and voice at Ursinus. After graduation she taught high school English and dramatics. While raising her family, Barbara continued to learn repertoire and perform recitals, choir solos and notably the soprano role in Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater" for alto and soprano at Valley Forge Chapel. She was a mainstay of the Octave Club of Norristown, and a leader of the Junior Octave Club for younger music students. She worked tirelessly to promote the Octave Club Evening Concerts, helping to nurture the emerging careers of singers, musicians, and dancers.

Barbara was delighted by children, especially her three grandchildren, Gordon, Catharine, and Hilary, whose collective talents and accomplishments were unparalleled in her eyes. Despite her Sunday church solo overlap, she remained a dedicated member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) Meeting in Norristown. She was active on Meeting committees, and volunteered faithfully at Norristown Ministries' soup kitchen. She maintained ties with Newtown Meeting. When she moved to Chandler Hall in 2007 she brought her love of music with her.

She is survived by her three children, Suzanne (Christopher Brookes), Pennington, NJ, Craig (Rebecca Kelly), New York City, and Malcolm Brashear, Norristown, PA, and three grandchildren: Gordon and Catharine Brookes, and Hilary Brashear; nephews and nieces, Peter, Robert and Elisabeth Cooke, Robert, John, and Amy (Xavier Miranda) Brashear, a sister-in-law, Hazel Brashear Bowser, and several great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Scott Brashear, and brother, Robert Lee Cooke, Jr. of California.

Memorial Service to be held Friday, August 5, 2016, 10 AM at Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court St, Newtown, PA 18940.
