Obituary

Carol Hagedorn Nemec passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at the age of 94. Born in 1922 in Collingswood, NJ, Carol was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Ivan H. Hagedorn and wife of Dr. Joseph W. Nemec. She moved to Philadelphia with her family and later graduated from Olney High School in 1939.

Carol is survived by 2 children, Joel (Norma) Nemec and Allyson (Todd) Nemec; and 7 grandchildren, Courtney, Joseph, Ashley, Brandon, J. Bretton, William and Jacob. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Joe, and her eldest son, Bruce.

Carol won a scholarship to Moore College of Art and also studied at Syracuse University. Upon graduation from Moore, she won a traveling European fellowship. Her studies were transferred to New Orleans and Mexico to avoid the conflict in Europe during WWII.

Carol worked in New York in textile design for several years before returning to Philadelphia to accept the job of assistant stylist of Cinderella Frocks, where she worked until she married Joe.

Carol was an active volunteer with arts, social and religious groups while raising her children in Abington. She was Vice President of the Abington New-Comers, long term Secretary of the Abington Middle School PTA, and sat on the board of the Parent Council of Abington High School. Carol worked on the Board of the Children's Library of Jenkintown and was a "Pink Lady" at Abington Memorial Hospital.

Carol was very active in her church, both at Bethel Lutheran in Philadelphia, and later at Holy Trinity in Abington. She was a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Church Council. For many years she served on the social Ministry Committee where she cooked and served for the Aids Dinners of Central Philadelphia, and the Homeless Dinners of Abington. Carol served as Chair of the NW District of the Lutheran Church Women for several terms, and sat on the boards of the Hunger Commission of the Lutheran Church in America.

Following Joe's retirement, Carol and Joe were able to travel the world, including trips to Europe, the Holy Lands, China, the Panama Canal, and her favorite trip – a safari to Africa. Most recently, Carol enjoyed the companionship of many friends at Gloria Dei Farms, and later the Park, where she was in many social events and arts and craft activities.
