Obituary for Catherine A. Sweeney

February 9, 2020
Langhorne, Pennsylvania

Catherine A. Sweeney, a retired Fleers Bubblegum Supervisor, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020. She was 79.

Born in Philadelphia, Cass was the daughter of the late Patrick McGinley and Catherine Dougherty. Cass was the middle child, having an older brother Francis and younger sister Peggy. She attended The Most Blessed Sacrament for grade school and was a graduate of West Catholic Girls High in 1958.

In July of 1969, Cass married her first love, Michael P Sweeney. The two were wed by Cass's uncle, Father McGinley, in the church of The Most Blessed Sacrament. The happy couple then traveled to Wildwood, NJ, where they spent their honeymoon in The Wildwood Hotel. Her husband being an active duty Marine, Cass lived in many places throughout her life. England, Virginia, Hawaii and North Carolina to name a few. In 1971, Cass and Michael purchased their first home at 704 W Champlost St in Olney.

Cass loved her life and the people in it! She would tell anyone who would listen how much she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Cass enjoyed listening to all types of music that ranged from the Chicken Dance to Puff the Magic Dragon. Car rides with tree lined streets and calling out simple street names brought her joy. Playing, or should I say boldly cheating, at WAR with anyone she could round up, was a favorite past time of hers. As long as their was a word search book, chapstick, nail filer, TISSUES, a pen for taping or an empty dental floss container and butterscotch candies within her reach, all was right in her world. Let's not forget the occasional requests for McDonalds fries and a root beer soda too.

Cass is survived by her husband Michael Sweeney, her children Catherine, Michael and Colin; and her eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to Cass' Life Celebration, Friday, February 14th, from 9-10am, at the Church of St. Helena, 6161 N. 5th St., Phila., and to participate in her Funeral Mass at 10am. Interment will be private. To share your fondest memories of Cass, please visit
