Obituary for Charles Richard Berkenstock

August 24, 2016
Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania

Charles Richard Berkenstock, 81, of Huntingdon Valley, PA, passed away on August 24, 2016, after a courageous battle against cancer with the support of his dedicated family. Rick was the devoted husband of Helen Loretta (Visco) for 58 years, loving father to Rick (Jennifer), Bryan (Mary Lynn), Christine Yardley (Kevin) and Jennifer Suit (Ben), and doting grandfather to Sarah, Michelle and Adam Berkenstock, Jacob and Jessica Berkenstock, Elizabeth, Josh, Rebecca and Zachary Yardley, and Nathan, Nick, Benny and Andrew Suit. Uncle Rick was also beloved by a multitude of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Rick was born in Philadelphia on March 19, 1935 to the late Charles Augustus Berkenstock Jr. and S. Carolyn (Philpet). He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth C. Harrar.

A 1953 graduate of Northeast High School, Rick also served in the Army and Army Reserves for 6 years and was a life-long member of the Masonic Order. Rick began his career in steel manufacturing with Peerless Steel in Philadelphia. Rick then became the proprietor of Adelphia Steel Equipment Company along with his partners in January 1974. Rick loved his work at Adelphia where he spent countless, hard-working hours doing every job within the factory to create what would eventually become steel desks, filing cabinets and storage closets. If you happened to call Adelphia after hours when everyone else had already left for the day, he often answered the phone saying "Chuck's place". Rick continued to work at Adelphia up until the time of its sale in December 2015.

Rick enjoyed playing cards, snow skiing, motorcycles, fast cars and speed boats, but above all else, he loved spending time with his family at his home in the Poconos on Fairview Lake. There Rick water skied, sailed, rode his wave runner and was captain of the boat.

Rick will be remembered for his hard work and generosity. For his piercing blue eyes and hearty laugh. For his fun-loving nature and devotion to his family. He was definitely "one of the good guys".
