Obituary

Donald Edward Bracken passed away peacefully at home at the age of 85, surrounded by his family. He was an adoring husband to Lorraine Blanchette Bracken and wonderful father to his daughter, Valerie. He was raised in Rockville Centre, NY, to parents Andrew Anthony Bracken and Janet Collins, with loving siblings Andrew and Nanette.

After he graduated from Hofstra University (Hempstead, N.Y.), he served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the reconstruction of Europe from 1954 to 1956. He then obtained a Master Degree from Holy Cross College (Worcester, MA) and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from University of Western Ontario (London, Canada), where he met Lorraine while he was president of the International Student Association. He became a professor at University of Hartford (CT), then research chemist at General Electric (Syracuse, NY) and at the Department of Health in Trenton (NJ).

He was an editor of the Shady Brook Community Newsletter. His hobbies included swimming, listening to opera and going to the symphony. His passion for classical music drove him to assemble a fine music collection. He thrived on adventurous travel and food, museums and exploration. He very much loved making friends and spending time with his large extended family, here and abroad.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Valerie, sister Nanette (Robert Madden), as well as many relatives and friends.

NoteĀ : The American flag that honors Donald's casket as a veteran was the flag that was placed on his father's casket who had served in the First World War.
