Obituary for Dorle Erika Neumann Weil

July 26, 1930 - October 8, 2019
Newtown, Pennsylvania | Age 89

Dorle Erika Neumann Weil, born July 26, 1930, in Berlin, Germany, died peacefully on October 8, 2019. In response to the rising unrest in Germany, Dorle and her parents moved from Berlin to Tehran, Iran in 1933, where her father was personal physician to the Shah. Dorle was a student for many years at the Community School in Tehran, an experience she remembered very fondly. Dorle lived in Tehran until 1945, when she and her mother emigrated to New York, NY. In New York, Dorle attended NYU and graduated from Hunter College. She met Fred Weil at a young adults group at the Ethical Culture Society in Manhattan. They married in 1952 and lived in Westbury and then Old Westbury, NY where they raised their four children. Dorle was a master of languages, fluently speaking German, French, English, Russian, and Persian and she learned passable Spanish later in life. She obtained a Masters in French Language and L iterature from Hofstra University. Dorle used her language skills through many international friendships and in helping Fred in his business. Dorle was a superb cook and baker, unintimidated by the most complicated of recipes. Her very rare flops were remembered with mirth by her family as well as by Dorle. Fred and Dorle were active members of the Long Island Ethical Humanist Society. They enjoyed travel throughout the world and loved their second home in Puerto Rico. Dorle was an avid and voracious reader, who transferred her love of reading to her children. Dorle and Fred moved to Pennswood Village in Newtown, PA in 2003. Fred passed away in 2006 and Dorle continued to enjoy her life and friendships at Pennswood until her death.

Dorle is survived by her four loving children, Judith Weil Epstein (Lloyd Epstein), Evelyn Weil Browne (Bill Browne), Margie Weil, and Dan Weil (Linda Weil) and by nine grandchildren (Oren, Ben, Yoel, Chloe, Maura, Lia, Andrew, Kathryn and Thomas) and five great-grandchildren.

At Dorle's request, there will be no memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to The Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead, NY or to the Pennswood Village Fellowship Fund in Newtown, PA.
