The Reverend Doctor Evelyn Birkel Thompson Aye loving mother and grandmother, passionate educator, devout, open-minded, evangelical believer and preacher of the Word of God and her savior Jesus Christ, accomplished artist, avid reader, fearless world traveler, lover of chocolate, inveterate swimmer who never met a body of water in which she didn't wish to submerge herself, and endlessly curious explorer of the full richness of life. Born: July 5, 1921 – Kuling, China and Died: August 18, 2015 – St. Mary's Hospital, Langhorne, PA, USA.

She is survived by her four children: Henry Alexander Thompson (and his wife, Rebecca) of London, England, Ann Adelle Thompson of Lawrenceville, NJ, Daniel Birkel Thompson of Princeton, NJ, and Carol May Thompson Hartpence (and husband, George) of New Hope, PA. She is also survived by her only grandchild – Alexandra Thompson Bracey (and her husband, Daniel), of Charlottesville, VA.

Evelyn grew up in China, the child of Presbyterian missionaries. Her family returned from China to the US in 1936. In 1942, she attended New York Theological Seminary for her master's degree in religious education and in 1950, received her Ph.D. from New York University in NY, NY. In December of 1945, Evelyn married the Reverend John (Jack) Alexander Thompson by whom she was pre-deceased in 1995. Evelyn and Jack served as teaching missionaries in Egypt from 1948 to 1967, when they returned to live in Princeton, NJ.

Evelyn was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1972. She served as assistant pastor at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and pastor at Rosedale Chapel, both in Princeton, NJ. She also worked in the Trenton Campus Ministry at Trenton State College – now The College of New Jersey. Evelyn and Jack retired to Duarte, CA, in 1983, to live at Westminster Gardens. In 2002, Evelyn moved back to the East Coast to be closer to her children and lived at Friends Home for eleven years (where she met her dear friend and companion, Sam Lipton) and for two years at Pickering Manor in Newtown, PA. She was active with Newtown Presbyterian Church and reveled in the beautiful music and many wonderful people there.

A service in celebration of Evelyn's life will held at Newtown Presbyterian Church, 25 N. Chancellor Street, Newtown, PA, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Interment will take place in her family plot in Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena, CA.
