Obituary for Helen Marie Dean

December 25, 1945 - March 7, 2018
Blue Bell, Pennsylvania | Age 72

Helen Marie Dean of Blue Bell passed away on March 7, 2018 at the age of 72. Born on December 25, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Helen (née Grady) and William Welding.

Helen primarily lived in the Whitpain/Blue Bell area and was a very active member of St. Helena's Roman Catholic Church. Helen attended Bishop Kenrick High School, and then attended Gwynedd Mercy College and Ursinus College, earning a BA in English. She later went on to become a classroom teacher at both Wissahickon School District and the Colonial School District as a substitute, long-term substitute, and theme reader. She also spent countless hours tutoring students preparing for their SAT's.

After classroom teaching, Helen took on the business world. Her biggest impact was her 14 years at The Vanguard Group where she spent most of her time as an Editor/Writer. She reviewed and modified prospectuses and various legal correspondence and documents. Helen was always willing to lend a hand, and often had a line at her desk waiting for help. Her attention to detail and command of grammar and writing techniques was second to none.

Helen found an opportunity to expand her love of teaching while working in the business world, helping adult students continue their education at Pennsylvania State University - Great Valley. For over 17 years, she taught grammar, writing skills, critical reasoning, reading comprehension skills, as well as teaching necessary concepts for students preparing for the GMAT test.

When Helen had spare time, she enjoyed volunteering at church, conquering sudoku puzzles, visiting the shore, having dinner with friends, going to plays, and traveling with her family. She also enjoyed making pumpkin bread and candy Easter eggs for family and friends.

Helen was a dedicated mother and grandmother and is survived by her children Chip Fennell (Madeline), Pam Lawn (Dave), and Greg Fennell (Joy), grandchildren CJ, Tommy, Emily, Liam, Devin, Billy, Jacey, and Maggie. Helen was a dear friend to many, but Harry Emery was a long-time friend and companion who will miss her dearly.

Helen was predeceased by her best friend and cousin Katherine Polley-Kleppin.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Helen's life on Monday March 12 from 6 - 8 PM at Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Funeral Home, 200 W Germantown Pike in Norristown, and on Tuesday March 13 at St. Helena Church, 1489 Dekalb Pike in Blue Bell from 10 - 11 AM, with her Funeral Mass immediately to follow.
