Obituary for Howard H. Frey

September 4, 1918 - January 5, 2018
Jenkintown, Pennsylvania | Age 99

Howard H. Frey, of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, died peacefully at home on January 5, 2018, at the age of 99. Born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on September 4, 1918, Howard graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II as a Lieutenant in Brazil supporting antisubmarine patrol squadrons.

In 1944 he married Helen Gamble, the love of his life, who died in 2011, following 67 years of marriage.  Howard and Helen had five children - Ann S. Frey, Howard H. Frey, Jr. (Eileen), William  G. Frey (Mary Ellen), Timothy A. Frey (Mary Jo), and Mark S. Frey (Lou Ann), together with 11 grandchildren and  2 great grandchildren.
After the war, Howard and Helen moved to Philadelphia where he first worked as a CPA for Price Waterhouse. Beginning in 1958, he was employed at the Westmoreland Coal Company where he spent the remainder of his career serving in various executive positions, including as President and Vice-Chairman, retiring in 1983.  He cherished his colleagues at Westmoreland, continuing to meet a number of them for lunch until shortly before his death.

Howard spent his long retirement with Helen traveling throughout the world, visiting their children and grandchildren, and supporting them in every possible way.  He also kept in close touch with the members of his extended family.  He was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Huntington Valley Country Club, and Philadelphia Union League.
He was one of the best of the "Greatest Generation."  Born at the end of the First World War, he grew up during the Depression and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He managed to pursue a successful career while still being very engaged with his wife and five children.  He rarely missed a school, church or Boy Scouts event.  All of his family will miss him very much, but will cherish our memories of him.
Relatives and friends are invited to share in Howard's Life Celebration at 11:00 am on February 3, 2018, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2086 Parkview Avenue, Abington, Pennsylvania 19001.  Family and friends will be greeted starting at 10:00 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at the above address or to Abington Jefferson Home Hospice, 2510 Maryland Avenue, Willow Grove PA 19090, would be greatly appreciated.
