Born in Philadelphia, he attended Germantown Academy, where he was president of his senior class, graduating in 1952. He attended Lehigh University, where he was a member of Delta Phi fraternity, graduating in 1956.

A proud veteran, Mr. Scott, spent two years in the United States Navy as a machinist's mate, where he served on the USS Intrepid. He was on the Intrepid when it was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea after the Suez Crisis.

Mr. Scott spent his entire working career in the financial services industry. Following his discharge from active duty, Mr. Scott began working for the Philadelphia National Bank. He then spent more than a decade in the investment business, working for such firms as Penington, Colket & Co., Cannon & Co., The Pro Fund, and Smyth, Akins & Lerch. He earned the designation as a Chartered Life Underwriter, and from 1972 until his retirement, he was employed by the Equitable Life Assurance Society of America.

An avid golfer, Mr. Scott was a long-time member of Huntingdon Valley Country Club and Pine Valley Golf Club. He devoted hundreds of hours to Huntingdon Valley, serving four terms as President from 1985-1989. He also served on the Board of Governors and as chairman of both the Golf and House Committees.
In addition to playing golf, he was an adept handyman and enjoyed working on projects in and around his home, attending model train shows throughout the area, and spending time with family and friends.

A man of impregnable character and honesty, he was a devoted husband and father. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Lee Hammer; three children, James W., Jr (Kathy) of Abington, Anne S. Moseley (Greg) of Porter, TX, and Kenneth B. (Christi) of Plano, TX; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 4, 2018 at Abington Presbyterian Church, 1082 Old York Road, Abington, PA 19001, where the family will receive friends one hour before the service.
