Obituary for Joanne Lois (nee Keller) Craig

January 19, 2020
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Joanne Lois Craig (nee Keller) , 82 years young, passed into eternal peace on Sunday, January 19, 2020.

Born in Philadelphia, She was the daughter of the late Edward J and Martha (Morrow) Keller.
She graduated from Germantown High School and as many young women in the 50's did, began her employment with Bell Telephone. Joanne then transitioned to the banking industry for many years. She was a loan officer at Continental Bank, then the Federal Credit Union.

Predeceased by Wilbur Craig, her husband of 25 years; they divorced in '81, but remained on cordial and friendly terms – a bonus that her children and grandchildren will be forever grateful. FAMILY meant everything to Joanne. Our Family Celebrations were joyous, free spirited, shared by all, and free of family drama! She is survived by her son Wilbur (Bill) Craig IV AND Daughter Vickie and her husband Dan Fisher. Joanne was beloved MeeMom to granddaughters Kathryn, Nicole, and Lauren and many of their friends. Her Granddaughters were her world!

Joanne loved Music – all the genres Classical to Rock, from Joan Baez, Paul McCartney, and Rod Stewart to Itzhak Perlman and Luciano Pavarotti …and saw them all in concert. She played the piano, despite the limited physical ability in her left hand, with aplomb. Back in the 50's, she would play "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" over and over, until the (older) neighbors begged her to stop.

Adopted at Birth – Eighty years later with the advent of DNA testing from and the diligent work of her niece Jeneen – Joanne found her family! Through her birth father, she was a cousin of Tyrone Power and a Daughter of the Revolution. Her paternal family has been traced to the 1500's and a journey "round the world" with the explorer Sir Francis Drake. With her daughter and granddaughters, she enjoyed a remarkable evening meeting with her half sister Sally and her 3 daughters and their family. Joanne remarked over and over on the way home," My heart is full". An immediate connection was made and they continued to chat (also with her half brother Steve) via phone and Facebook for the past 2 years.
DNA and Facebook also afforded the meeting of her half sister Heidi, daughter of Joanne's birth mother. They too, established a phone and Facebook relationship. She savored this blessing and was ever so grateful. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Jeneen.

A skilled seamstress, she fashioned many a Mother/Daughter outfit, Easter dresses/coats and a few of Vickie's prom dresses. Joanne was a devotee of Astrology. She attended many workshops and was skilled at Astrological charting. Before computer programs, this was a fascinating, but laborious process.

Many people rescue pets and stray animals. Joanne rescued people….Friends, friends of friends in need of a place to stay. Women, a few with children, some in abusive relationships, one family temporarily displaced by fire…all found a place in her home and compassionate heart.

Joanne was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church for many years. She was a Spiritual person, a follower of Edgar Cayce and a firm believer in the Afterlife AND Reincarnation. Joanne believed that after death you are sent back to relive your life over and again until you've learned all the lessons that God intended and only then will you live your best life.

One of our last conversations – I asked my Mom, if she could speak to anyone – who would it be….She replied immediately, "Jesus". Our angel is now watching over us, has lived her best life, and is chatting with the Lord. Of this, I am certain.

Relatives and friends are invited to Joanne's Life Celebration Memorial Service on Friday January 24th from 11AM-12:30PM at the John F. Givnish Life Celebration Home, with a service and opportunity to share to follow at 12:30PM.
