Obituary for John J. Skarbek

January 13, 1941 - May 20, 2021
North Wales, Pennsylvania | Age 80

John J. Skarbek, of North Wales, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at his residence. He courageously battled mesothelioma for 15 months, seldom complaining and still finding the humor in life until the end. He was 80 years old. John was born in Philadelphia on January 13, 1941 to the late John C. Skarbek and Rita M. (née Bowers) Skarbek. He was the husband to Marion V. (née Hirst) Skarbek, by whom he is survived. Together they shared 53 years of marriage. John grew up with his four siblings in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. He graduated from Roman Catholic High School in 1958 and served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. While working full time for the Philadelphia Fire Department, he pursued his education. He attended the Community College of Philadelphia where he studied Fire Science. He then earned his Bachelor's Degree from Holy Family College of Philadelphia. John later earned his Master's Degree in Public Safety from St. Joseph's University. He worked with the Philadelphia Fire Department for 28 years from 1965 to 1993, retiring as a Battalion Chief. After retirement from the fire department, he worked for Main Line Health and Paoli Hospital, as the director of Safety and Security. In his free time, John enjoyed following the Philadelphia Phillies, collecting sports cards, attending retired fire marshall meetings and fire musters, and attending his granchildren's sporting events. He and Marion also enjoyed selling their "old junk" at local flea markets. After 53 year of marriage, they still enjoyed being together and laughing. He enjoyed reading Consumer Reports as well as novels from some of his favorite authors, Vince Flynn and Lee Child. He also loved listening to music (too loudly, according to Marion). His favorites were the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones.

Along with his wife Marion, John is survived by his son Jason Skarbek (fiancé Helen Beyer), his daughter Amanda Skarbek (husband Jeremy Sklar) and his grandchildren: Sebastian Skarbek, Sydney Skarbek, Leo John Sklar, and Olivia Sklar. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert Skarbek (the late Vicki), James Skarbek (Jean Marie), Rita DiCicco (Charles), Joan Marsico (Michael) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
