Obituary for John W. Berger, Sr.

September 30, 2019

John W. Berger, Sr. was born on October 24, 1927 in Coatesville, PA to the late John D. Berger and Homesell (Goodall) Berger. John received his education in the Coatesville School District and later in Pittsburgh, PA followed by studies at Temple University. John was one of thirteen children, ten of whom preceded him in death (Betty, Marie, Sarah, Howard, Margaret, Oliver, Roebuck, George, Ethel and Childs).  On September 4, 1954 John married Martha (Jenkins) and she preceded him in death.  To this union, two children were born: John Jr. (deceased) and Theresa. On April 26, 2003, John rediscovered love and married Lydia (Price) whom he always wanted at his side.

At the age of 24, John was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for three years. Following his honorable discharge, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Food Inspector for over 40 years until his retirement. On March 20, 1970, John symbolized his dedication to Jehovah God as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.  Those who knew him know how much he loved to attend congregation meetings and talk about the hope of a paradise earth.  Most of us also knew John as someone who was very physically fit even in his older years and he loved friendly bowling competitions along with games such as checkers. He also liked working in his garden. Most of all, John enjoyed eating out with his wife and family, and traveling on cruises and other vacations with his wife, Lydia.

Sadly, John departed this life on September 30, 2019 at the age of 91, with his wife and his daughter at his side. John is survived by his loving wife Lydia, his daughter Theresa, sisters Ruth Lawrence and Madeline Cartwright. He was the cherished grandfather to four grandchildren: Terrell, Jocelyn, Taylor and Terez. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

We will always remember John for his vibrant personality, his generosity and his laughter. He will be truly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to John's Life Celebration Friday, October 11th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 12th, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., at John F.
