Obituary

Joseph R. Smith, 88, of Langhorne passed away suddenly on November 15, 2020 due to complications of a stroke. Beloved husband of the late Dolores Delrio Smith. Loving father of Bonnie Lavoie (Pat), Doreen Huston (Bryan), Lisa Lyons (Dave), Jennifer Grozalis (Bob), the late Joseph E. Smith (Stephanie).

He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren who adored him - Kelly, Julianne, Stephanie, Sam, Jaclyn, David, Michael, Chris, Tyla, and Addison. He was predeceased by his grandson Thomas Joseph (TJ). Loving great-grandfather to Crescenzo, Rocco, Margot, and Jameson. Dear brother of George Smith and Marie Fertig and many nieces and nephews. He was the proud dog father of Zoe for 20 years, who recently passed on.

Joe was born in Maizeville, PA where he met the love of his life, Dolores, in high school. They were married December 28, 1952 just weeks before he left to serve in the US Army during the Korean War. Their love story will forever be an inspiration to his children and grandchildren. He was a proud veteran and member of the American Legion in Wharton, NJ. He was a coal miner for many years, eventually moving to New Jersey where he was a plumber, electrician, and handyman for Bell Labs. He could repair anything.

Joe was a family man and never turned down an invitation to spend time with his children and grandchildren. One of his favorite things to do for family was cook! He was famous for making dozens of pounds of mashed potatoes on family holidays, pies, soups, and hot lunches to bring to his children's houses on random weekdays, and as recently as last year, hand-cut homemade French fries at the annual family camping trip with his grandsons and sons-in-law. He helped raise his grandchildren, caring and cooking for them. He was always there when they needed him.

Joe was the life of every party he went to (and he went to every party), frequently the "last man standing" at family gatherings, holidays, and his favorite, Penn State and West Virginia tailgate weekends.

A socially distant Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Grace Point Church, 592 Washington Crossing Rd, Newtown. Visitation will be from 1:30- 2pm and the memorial service will start at 2pm.
