Obituary for Mr. Joseph Viglione

June 26, 2021
Norristown, Pennsylvania

On Saturday, June 26, 2021, the Viglione family lost their patriarch. Joseph Viglione, 89, passed away unexpectedly at his home in West Norriton. He was born on August 9, 1931 in Connellsville, PA. Joe was the youngest child, of the late Guiseppe and Marian (DiMonica) Viglione and he was preceded in death by his 13 siblings. He was married to: Madeline (Breslin) Viglione (deceased), Kay (Parente) Viglione (deceased), and later in life found his life-long companion Doreen (Dodie) Cawley (deceased).
Joe was the beloved father of son Joseph and his wife Niphaphorn Viglione, son David and his wife Kate (Causland) Viglione, son Robert and his wife Cindy Viglione, son Thomas Viglione, daughter Dolores Hemerka and her husband Ramon Sanchez. Joe really enjoyed participating in the lives of his 5 children and 21 grand-children, and 8 great grandchildren. Throughout the years he became a constant (mostly positive) presence at their wrestling and lacrosse matches, ice-hockey, football, baseball and softball games and every one of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren looked forward to hearing and seeing him in the stands rooting for them; the refs maybe not so much.
Grandchildren: Stephanie, Danielle, Angelina, Samantha, Joseph D., Susan, Jill, Thomas, Steven, Brook, Lauren, Taylor, Chris, Stephen, Colton, Chase, Scottie Rose, Quinn, Rebecca, Kriskhajohn, and Kanyapat
Great Grandchildren: Cortland, Maddox, Adrianna, Enzo, Connor Avery, Madison, Troy
Joe wore a lot of "hats" (pun intended). When he met his love Dodie and her crew, little did he know how much his life was about to change. Not only did Doreen introduce him to her four daughters: Leslie, Jennifer, McCall, and Jayd, but also three sons-in-law: Bob, Scott, and Jamie, 10 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. Joe loved his extended family as if they were his own. Along with this newfound extended family came his love of lacrosse and more hats! He quickly went from a novice spectator to a professional Fan!
Joe was a retired semi-truck driver who stayed active for the last 20+ years working with his son Thomas at Viglione's Auto Body Shop in Norristown, PA. Joe was also a Navy Veteran of the Korean War Era, assigned to the USS Albany (CA-123) from 1951 until 1955 where he earned the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class (GM3). He was a life-long die-hard Cleveland Brown Fan. Sunday afternoons in the 60's and 70's could be raucous at the Viglione house. He stuck with his team through thick and thin and could never forgive Art Modell for moving his team to Baltimore.
Later in life Joe loved to travel; visiting new friends in Scotland with his love Dodie, and he also travelled to Thailand twice to visit his son Joseph and wife Niphaphorn where he loved to go out on the farm and just "do stuff". He travelled to Florida and California many times to visit and spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He would never allow himself to be idle. Joe was also an avid gardener and loved to grow his own vegetables. In any given year he would have 2-3 gardens spread amongst the children and grandchildren.
Joe was also a member in good standing at the Mannechor Club in Norristown where he danced, drank, played bingo, watched the Phillies, and talked with his friends. Joe also enjoyed a good martini or 3 as well. Everybody knew and loved Joe and they affectionately referred to him as "Hammer".
This obituary could not possibly cover the whole of Joe's life. It was too rich. It touched too many people across too many continents. He loved his family, and he was always there for them.
Relatives and Friends are invited to Joe's Life Celebration on Thursday, July 1, 2021; from 12 to 2pm and from 4 to 7:30pm at the Boyd Horrox Givnish Funeral Home, 200 W. Germantown Pike Norristown, PA 19401; followed by his Funeral service from 7:30-8:00pm. His Interment will be private.
