Obituary for Jozef Warchol

March 20, 1927 - September 9, 2019
| Age 92

Jozef Warchol, originally of Bednarowka, Poland, died in hospital after a short illness on September 9, 2019. Born on March 20, 1927, he was the son of Ludwik and Anna (nee Maksymowicz) Warchol. Jozef and his family were ripped away from their family farm by the Russian Army in the winter of 1939. The family was sent to a Siberian work camp where his father died. A few years later, Jozef, claiming to be 17, left Siberia through the Middle East and found himself in Egypt where he joined the Polish Corp, 2nd Warsaw Armoured Division under the British 8th Army. He served in Italy at the end of the war. He was a radio operator in a tank and was wounded in battle.

After the war, Jozef was given the choice of returning to Poland or going to the United Kingdom. He found himself in London in the fall of 1945. It was there that he met his wife, Alice. They married in London in March of 1951. In 1954, Jozef and Alice immigrated to the United States, settling in Norristown. Jozef was a long-time employee of Wonder Bread Bakery on Main Street. He loved to play golf, was an avid stamp collector and model train enthusiast. After 25 years, he returned to Poland for a visit and was reunited with his mother and younger brother, Marek.

Jozef is survived by three children, Andrew (Patricia), Valerie Breznicky, and Joseph. He has three grandchildren, Michael, Allison and Joseph Breznicky, and one great-grandchild, Luca Capcino. His wife of 66 years, Alice (nee Kavanagh) and his younger brother, Marek and older half-brother Stanislav Guzek, preceded him in death.

Our father will be cremated, and a remembrance celebration is planned for the near future.
