Obituary for Dr. Laurence M. Russell, Jr.

May 31, 2021
Newtown, Pennsylvania

Dr. Laurence Myers Russell, Jr., 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by close family the evening of May 31, 2021 at his lifelong home at Walnut Run Farm in Newtown, PA, following a brief illness. Present with love and support were his son, Laurence Myers Russell III, brother Steve Russell, and sisters Alice Russell and Joan Brackbill.
Dr. Russell graduated from the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Guilford College in Greensboro, NC and Temple University School of Medicine. After his 3-year residency in Family Practice at Hunterdon Medical Center in New Jersey, Larry spent a few years in private practice, followed by a dedicated family practice as Director of Residence Training at Hunterdon Family Medicine at Phillips-Barber Health Center in Lambertville, NJ.
After many years at Phillips-Barber, Larry joined the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, where he traveled all over the United States and the world reviewing and ensuring the high standards of graduate medical programs. He enjoyed this work for many years, as well as his travels to such places as Singapore, Qatar, and China.
On the personal side, Larry enjoyed living on his eighty-five acre farm, which his parents bought in 1933. Through his continuous hard work and effort, he vastly improved the buildings and grounds during his lifetime. He sought to preserve the atmosphere of both Walnut Run Farm and the Upper Makefield Township community by entering into a conservation agreement and, thus, restricting further development and preserving open land and the more rural atmosphere.
Dr. Russell was an accomplished woodworker, maintaining a full wood shop where he turned hundreds of bowls sourced from a variety of trees on his farm. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, traveling to Martha's Vineyard, the Bahamas and Alaska for those ventures. Having been very successful as a high school athlete in football, baseball and swimming, Larry was a dedicated fan of Philadelphia sports teams.
Dr. "Larry" Russell, Jr is survived by his son, his siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, friends and former colleagues. He will be missed by all. Services will be private.
