Obituary

LeRoy H. "Butz" Dietrich passed away May 25, 2021 peacefully at home. A lifetime resident of the greater Philadelphia area, Roy will be remembered for his incredible love of family and friends, (and sheet cake).

Born in Philadelphia, PA on September 4, 1938, the son of the late LeRoy H. and Mildred E. (Lahr) Dietrich, Roy was an alumnus of North Catholic High School and the University of Maryland. At UM, Roy was a proud member of the Maryland Terrapins football team, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and also the treasurer of the 1962 graduating class.

Roy loved his country, was an incredible patriot and served with distinction in the US Navy as a Reserve Aviation Electronics Technician from 1962 to 1968. He returned to the Philadelphia area following college graduation and worked at IBM for three decades, retiring in 1992. He continued to keep busy professionally through various consulting roles and also in the automotive industry. In 1965, Roy was introduced to the love of his life, Ann Johnson by mutual friends. They got married in 1966, and would have celebrated their 55th anniversary on June 4th.

An active member in a number of University of Maryland alumni organizations, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the M Club, Roy would regularly return to College Park to support his alma mater and football team, often times bringing carloads of family and friends together at homecoming for epic tailgating and storytelling.

In the Plymouth Meeting community, Roy was a parishioner at St. Paul's Catholic Church and dedicated many years as a religious education teacher and also a Eucharistic minister.

Roy traveled extensively during his retirement, including visiting Bermuda a record 38 times. He also took countless trips around the country to spend time with family and friends. On these trips, he loved to send cards and postcards to everyone, hoping to bring a smile to a friend's face with a catchy phrase or two. In honor of Roy, please send a card to someone you love. You will make their day.

Roy is survived by his cherished wife Ann, and three children, Holly Cassidy (Jim), Wendy Hinkley (Billy) and Sue Dietrich. He was the very proud Pop Pop of 2 grandchildren, Connery and Clare Cassidy. He is also survived by his brother, William (Bill) Dietrich of Millersville, MD, as well as many nieces and a nephew.

Roy was preceded in death by his brother Gerard "Jerry" L. Dietrich.

Relatives and friends are invited to Roy's Life Celebration visitation from 9:45-10:30 AM followed by his Memorial Mass at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at St. Philip Neri Church, 437 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444
