Obituary

Marie Ann (Dowd) Cowen passed away at the age of 83 on Sunday, October 1st at Chandler Hall in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Born on March 2, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, Marie was one of six children of Marie (Smith) and Walter Dowd.

Marie attended business school in New York and became the executive secretary to the first Vice President at Bank of America In Manhattan. While working there, she agreed to a blind date with a young gentleman who worked at Chase Manhattan Bank.

That fortuitous lunch blossomed into a 58-year marriage. On October 10, 1959, Marie married William Francis Cowen, Jr. The young couple lived in Brooklyn up until the birth of their first child, and then settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they would raise their family and remain for the rest of their loving marriage. The Cowens lived in Yardley, Washington Crossing and, most recently, in Newtown.

Marie Cowen is survived by her husband, William, and their children Margaret Hickey (John); Alicia Coghlan (Raymond); and William, III (Rosanne); and grandchildren Joshua, Daniel, Bailey, Mairin, Nina, and Lanty.

Also mourning the loss of Marie are nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, and assorted family, friends, neighbors, and parishioners who were lucky enough to cross her warm and gracious path.

Marie was predeceased by her parents Walter and Marie and siblings Joan La Fortune, Walter, Gerard, Stephen and Anthony.

Marie was a true lady who adhered to old-world values and traditions. Among these was mailing greeting cards to loved ones for every special event imaginable. Marie never forgot a birthday, an anniversary, a new job, Easter, Halloween or any other occasion. She diligently maintained an encyclopedic paper calendar and may be the sole reason the greeting card industry still exists.

She was known as "Re", Mom, Nana, Aunt Marie, and Mrs. Cowen, but all knew her as a pillar of grace, kindness, and strength. She was a true family matriarch, and left a legacy of faith, loyalty, elegance and humility.

Relatives and friends are invited to Marie's Life Celebration on Friday, October 20, 2017 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the Olde Church of St. Andrew, 135 S. Sycamore St. Newtown PA, 18940 followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held privately at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.

If you wish to honor Marie, we ask that instead of sending flowers, you send a greeting card to a friend or family member, through the mail. If you wish to make a donation, please know that Marie had a personal connection to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and valued the good work that they do. www.stjude.org
