Obituary

Maria Domenica "Marie" D'Alfonso of Audubon, PA, formerly of Plymouth Meeting, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the age of 99. Born March 26, 1922, in Roccascalegna, Province of Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy, she grew up in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. She was the daughter of the late Rosario and Maria Carmina "Carmela" (nee Pierluigi) D'Alfonso.

She made her career in banking, retiring from Girard Bank as an executive assistant in 1982.

Marie was a caretaker but also an adventurer. She took loving care of her family but also traveled the world, visiting many places in North America, South America and Europe; she was still going strong in her eighties, traveling to Greece and Turkey. She always embraced the full experience offered by each destination: she explored shipwrecks in a submersible in the Cayman Islands, climbed the steps to the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado and hiked through Iguazu National Park in Brazil. Closer to home, she enjoyed dining out with friends and family, tending her flowerboxes and spending time in Atlantic City, trying her hand at the casinos. She was an accomplished cook and talented baker with a passion for entertaining family and friends. Family members often requested one of her legendary blueberry pies as a birthday gift, and always looked forward to her Feast of the Seven Fishes and cannoli during the Christmas holidays.

Marie is survived by her three nieces: Joann Moscariello, Linda Schell (John), and Michele Moscariello, her great niece Dana Schell and her great nephews John Patrick Schell and David Gerchufsky, and many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters Helen D'Alfonso and Rosemarie Moscariello.

There will be a viewing at Epiphany of Our Lord Church on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., a Mass will be celebrated for Marie at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in Marie's honor may be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at www.bcrf.org.
