Obituary

Mary Lu Dolan of Philadelphia and Meadowbrook, PA was born in
Mt. Sinai Hospital, NY on March 28, 1937. Loving daughter of the late Thomas A. and Catherine L. (nee Duffy) Dolan She was raised in Mayfair, and lived in both Fox Chase and Meadowbrook. Peacefully surrounded by family, Mary Lu passed on July 2, 2021 from pneumonia. She is survived by her sister, Sister Anne Marie Dolan, CSR and her brother, Thomas (Tad) Dolan and his wife Catherine. Mary Lu is also survived by three nieces and a nephew: Cathy Thornton (Dave), Tom Dolan (Sharon), Maureen McHugh (Dan), and Patti Loftus (Brian) and grandnieces and grandnephews: Bruce Dolan (Corrine), Danny McHugh, Kyle Dolan, Colleen McHugh, Connor Dolan, Ryan Thornton, Caitlyn Thornton, Erin Loftus and Kaelyn Loftus.

Mary Lu spent her life in service to others. She graduated from St. Hubert's High School in 1955 where she grew in her love for music and art. Mary Lu loved children and treasured the opportunity to form their young minds as a teacher. She taught in Queens, NY. Mary Lu also taught 5th grade for several years at Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Southampton, PA. She then started her career at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Human Resources where she became department head. She worked a total of 40 years at the hospital which included service in Mission Integration. Later, Mary Lu provided dedicated service at the Holy Redeemer Food Cupboard in Northeast Philadelphia for 10 years until retiring after a total of 50 years of service with Holy Redeemer Health System. However, Mary Lu continued to actively participate in the Redeemer Mission as she volunteered weekly at Kathryn's Corner, a neighborhood thrift shop that was based at Drueding Center in North Philadelphia. Mary Lu exemplified Christian service day by day. She never "worked at a job", rather, her life was totally immersed in ministry.

Mary Lu was a Resident Redeemer Associate and lived in community with the Sisters of the Redeemer fully embracing and living the Redeemer Charism and Spirituality. Along with the Sisters, she took her responsibility in community and generously shared her gifts with others. Her gentle presence was a source of joy and solace for all. She had a special gift for noticing those most vulnerable in her midst and caring for those most disadvantaged locally and globally. In a simply profound manner, Mary Lu found ways to live the Gospel message: Whatever you do for the least of these, you have done for me (MT 25:40).
She will be dearly missed by the Sisters, Redeemer Associates and the Redeemer Family.

Mary Lu enjoyed life, family gatherings and celebrating her Irish heritage. She appreciated music and especially delighted in Irish, country western and classical music. Mary Lu loved to travel. She enjoyed skiing in Vermont, vacationing with family in Maine and taking trips to Ireland and the Holy Land. Mary Lu was a life-long Eagles, Sixers and Phillies fan and loved a good horserace now and then.

The influence of Mary Lu's goodness will continue to be a source of loving kindness in our world through those inspired to live her example.
