Obituary for Mary T. Herron

September 29, 1933 - November 9, 2021
Philadelphia | Age 88

With heavy hearts, the family of Mary Theresa Herron (nee Colihan), age 88, announce her passing after a courageous battle with cancer on November 9, 2021. "Mary T" was known for her beautiful smile, sense of humor, sharp wit, infectious laughter, love of history, politics, intrigue, and all things Irish. She was born on September 29, 1933 in Lost Creek, upstate Pennsylvania where she enjoyed playing in the mountains, gathering wild blueberries with her two beloved sisters, Honey and Deanie, dancing and singing in musical shows and generally being the life of the party. She continued this love of life when she moved to Germantown, then Oreland, PA, where she attended Little Flower High School and then Springfield Township High School, graduating in 1950. She met her best friends at both schools, forming a special lifetime "sorority" that still exists today.

With her husband and friends, she travelled the country, went on cruises, London and to Ireland multiple times. She danced and walked in many St. Patrick's Day parades, from Philadelphia all the way to Dublin, Ireland. She enjoyed her time as a Timoney Irish dancer, and attending Ceili dances. She broke out in song without warning, and up to the end knew more song lyrics and poems, than anyone in the room. Mary truly embraced life. She met her husband of thirty years, James C.Herron, at the Brighton Pub in Atlantic City. Following his time in the United States Navy, they married and had four children, James Jr., Kevin, Alice and Geraldine, raising them in Philadelphia, where she remains a member of Our Lady of Calvary Parish.

Mary worked for Paper Manufacturing Company for several years, and ultimately retired from the Philadelphia Electric Company as a bookkeeper, proudly still able to speed type and do shorthand. She loved to read, completed crossword puzzles every day, and was tough competition during Jeopardy. She loved to sit with her brother Hughie and talk about his time in the Philly D.A.'s office, and her husband Jim's days in the Philadelphia Police Department. Most of all, Mary loved her family, fiercely protective, unwaveringly loyal and always there for each of them. She truly gave her all, but didn't hesitate to speak her mind when necessary! She loved holidays and expected full family attendance at each one, where plenty of food, wine and laughter was served. She insisted on doing it all, well into her eighties.

Her family will miss her, especially her love, generosity and sassy comments more than words can ever say. She deeply loved her grandchildren who truly enjoyed their MomMom, and will miss her every day. She found another wellspring of love for her great grandchildren, and even the youngest felt that love from her, and loved her in return. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James C. Herron, cherished parents, Gerald and Sarah Colihan, father and mother in law, Patrick and Alice Herron, sister Helen Ann Kinsey (James), and brother in laws Frank Herron (late Eileen) and William Herron (Jean). Surviving are her four children, James. C. Herron, Jr. (Jeanine), Kevin Herron (Melodie), Alice Lihou (Alistair), and Geraldine Hampson (Harry); 14 grandchildren, Lindsay Griffith (Jason), Lauren DeCarlo (Marco), Heather Lanzalotti (Henry), Renee Micciolo (Michael), James C. Herron (Erin), Bethanie Glavin (Sean), Bridget Dolan (James), Robert Herron, Kelly Ross (Ryan), Alexandra Haffert (Ethan), Shannon Hampson, MaryKate Borek (Tom), Shana Herron, Liam Herron (Colleen), 12 adored great-grandchildren, sister Geraldine McFadden (late Patrick), Hugh Colihan (Marie), and sister-in-laws, Nancy Burke (James) and Alice Herron. She is also survived by a loving extended family and many nieces and nephews.
