Obituary

Patrick J. Harkin, Jr., known as "Jackie" to his family and "Pat" to his friends, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017. He was 87 years old. Pat was born in Norristown on January 31, 1930 to the late Patrick J. Harkin, Sr. and Anna (nee McNeil) Harkin. He attended Norristown Area High School and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving from 1947 to 1951. During his service, he attained the rank of Sergeant and served in the VMF-214 Black Sheep Squadron. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, and the Korean Service Medal having served in the Korean War Conflict from January to November 1951. After his time in the Marine Corps, Pat enjoyed his work as an Electronics Technician for the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster for a career that lasted 31 years. His "second career" was fulfilling to him, serving for 25 years as a volunteer at Norristown State Hospital. Pat also enjoyed camping, gardening, sailing, aviation and seeing that everyone was having a good time. He was also an inducted member of the Chapel of Four Chaplains in Valley Forge.

Pat is survived by his wife of 30 years Victoria A. Harkin (nee Madara), his sister, Patricia (Walter) McNamee, as well as his children; Michael (Laurie) Harkin, Kathleen (Walter) Vogel, Patrick (Franne) Harkin, III, Colleen Sinex, James Harkin, and Thorne (Maura) Harkin as well as multitudes of grandchildren and great grandchildren. His is pre-deceased by his siblings; Jean Little, Joan Coine, Rev. John Harkin, Winifred "Sweetie" McGinley, and Donald Harkin. "Uncle Jackie" will also be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to Pat's Life Celebration on Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 10:00-10:50 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 600 Hamilton St Norristown PA 19401, followed by his funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at St. Patrick's Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat's name may be made to St. Francis of Assisi School, 601 Hamilton St. Norristown PA 19401.
