Obituary for Rhetta S. McMeans

February 3, 2020
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Rhetta S. McMeans, of Philadelphia, passed away on February 3rd, 2020, at the age of 89. Rhetta was the loving wife of Raymond J. McMeans Jr. for 66 wonderful years. Rhetta was also the caring mother to Bonnie L. McMeans (Jay Kuklinski), the late David McMeans, Daniel T. McMeans (Nancy), and Raymond J. McMeans III (Karen). Rhetta will also be greatly missed by her sisters, Sylvia Mader (Arthur Cohen), and Marsleete Pelz (Carlos). Rhetta leaves behind an impressive legacy in her eleven grandchildren: Thomas R. Kuklinski (Martha Ripple), Michael J. Kuklinski, Diana M. Kuklinski, Cara Medina (Gil), Courtney Becker (Ross), Kelsey Whalen (Brendan), Sherri Evancho, Becky Evancho, Kate E. Farbo (James), Julia M. McMeans, Raymond J. McMeans IV, and great-grandchildren Lee Kuklinski, Nell Kuklinski, and Maeve Whalen.

Rhetta was happiest when she was with family. She cherished her husband Raymond, whom she met when he was 18, and she was 20. She was a caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always putting her family before herself. A pianist, Rhetta would play carols on Christmas Eve and began the tradition of the family singing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus, as well as signing a tablecloth year after year. She will always be remembered for her fascination with angels and her love of old movies, Native American history, gardening, a medium rare burger with all the fixings, manhattans, and St. Patrick's Day parties, during which she had all the grandchildren mention something they were proud of. Rhetta enjoyed seeing her prize roses, irises and hydrangeas bloom each year, as well as attending the Philadelphia Flower Show with her daughter Bonnie. In the summer, Rhetta enjoyed long walks in the woods, gazing at the stars, and spending time with the family on the porch of their rental in Stone Harbor, NJ.

Relatives and friends are invited to Rhetta's "Life Celebration" visitation on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 at the Craft-Givnish Funeral Home (1801 Old York Road, Abington 19001) from 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and on Thursday, February 6th at Old Haverford Friends Meeting (235 E Eagle Road, Havertown, PA 19083) from 10:30 a.m - 12 p.m. for the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, Rhetta would want you to plant a bulb, perennial, shrub or tree to enjoy for years to come. Donations in Rhetta's memory can be made to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
