Obituary for Richard William Grear III

October 4, 1942 - July 21, 2018
Phoenixville, Pennsylvania | Age 75

On Saturday, July 21 at 11:45 AM, Richard William Grear III of Phoenixville passed away at the Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester, PA surrounded by his family. He was 75 years young.

'Dick', as he was known to friends, was born on October 4, 1942 in Longcrest, in North East Philadelphia to Richard and Ruth (Gordon) Grear. He attended Olney High School where he was a standout lineman on the football team. He went on to play football at Temple University, later graduating summa cume laude from Montgomery County Community College.

Following college he joined the Marine Reserve, serving as a navigator based out of Willow Grove, PA. At the same time he began work in sales at WFLN, then Philadelphia's top classical music station. Through a coworker he met and fell in love with Susan Slaughter, with whom he began a 52-year marriage on January 1, 1966. After 25 years at WFLN, he worked for several years in commercial and industrial roofing, after which he joined Aramark as general manager providing oversight for the Jenkintown School District.

Richard was the consummate jokester, and his friendliness and infectious sense of humor endeared him to people he met from all walks of life. He was also known for his model work ethic, which he passed on to his children. He coached youth sports teams for all of his children, served as head usher for two decades at Fairview Village Church of the Nazarene, and was known by children in his neighborhood as 'Mr. Magic' for his vibrant 4thof July fireworks displays. Richard especially loved and was beloved by his ten grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as 'Silly Poppy'.

Richard is survived by his wife Susan, his mother (Ruth), his siblings (Barry and Debby), his four children (Rick, Andy, Melissa and Scott), their spouses (Debbie, Connie and Mark) and his ten grandchildren (Hillary, Aaron, Braden, Jackson, Naomi, Carter, Nathaniel, Madeleine, Norah, and Chase) and many nieces and nephews.

Guest are invited to pay their respects at 10 AM at the Valley Forge Baptist Church located at 616 S. Trappe Rd., Collegeville, PA 19426 on Wednesday, July 25th. A service celebrating Richard's life will be conducted following the receiving of condolences to the family at 11 AM.
