Obituary

Robert K. McLain, retired business executive, died October 18, 2017 at his home in Phoenixville, PA. He was 91. Mr. McLain retired in 1991 from his position as Vice President and Controller of Alco Standard Corporation (later Ikon Office Solutions, Inc., acquired by the Ricoh Company). He continued on a part-time basis managing various Delaware-based investment companies of Alco, Ikon, Unisource and other Alco spinoffs for many years after his retirement.

Mr. McLain was born in Evanston, IL, grew up in nearby Wilmette and graduated from New Trier High School. He served in the 99th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II. Following discharge, he attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1949 with a business administration degree.

He soon moved to Michigan where he received a CPA certificate in 1955 while working for Ernst & Ernst (now EY). He joined the former Clark Equipment Company in 1957, becoming its Controller in 1966. In 1972, he joined Alco Standard Corporation as Controller of an Alco subsidiary in Kent, OH. In 1973 he moved to Audubon, PA to become Assistant Corporate Controller for Alco. He was promoted to Controller in 1978 and Vice President in 1983.

Mr. McLain was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Phoenixville Country Club. He was a member of the Financial Executives Institute and from 1951 to 1999 of the Institute of Management Accountants. He had several technical articles published in Management Accounting Quarterly.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy (nee Newnam) McLain. An earlier marriage to the former Margaret Sullivan, who also preceded him in death, ended in divorce.

He is survived by four sons, Michael of Washington, DC; Patrick of Royal Oak, MI; John (Monika) of Vernon Hills, IL and Kenneth (Lisa) of Bellefonte, PA; a daughter Deborah Gillette (David Monreal) of Antioch, IL; two step-daughters, Lisa Vetter (Charles) of Quakertown, PA and Lori Koch of Collegeville, PA; one step-son, Jerome Koch (Julie) of St. Joseph, MI; twenty-two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Friends and relatives are invited to Robert's Life Celebration on Monday October 23 from 6PM to 8PM and again on Tuesday October 24 from 10AM to 11AM with a service to immediately follow at Boyd-Horrox-Givnish Life Celebration Home of East Norriton, 200 West Germantown Pike.
