Obituary

Roscoe McDowell, Jr., of Norristown, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017 at his residence. He was 80 years old. Roscoe was born on Dec. 18, 1936 to the late Roscoe McDowell, Sr. and Lila Austin (nee Petomey) in Pensacola, Florida. He was the husband to Bernice D. McDowell (nee Reid) with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.

Roscoe was a 1955 graduate from Cass Technical School specializing in Engineering. He attended both the Detroit Institute of Technology and Montgomery County Community College and retired from E.F. Houghton as a Lubrication Engineer. While living in Detroit, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably being stationed in Panama where he grew to love deep sea fishing. Roscoe was Proprietor of B & R Dry Cleaners and was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Norristown where he served as President of the Patrician Society for nearly five years. He was also Founder and President of "Roscoe's Raiders" a bowling league to support the Patrician Society. Roscoe was also Chairman of the Black Republican Committee in Norristown and a past President of the American Society of Lubrication Engineers. Roscoe was an accomplished musician, playing both the drums and xylophone.

In addition to his wife, Roscoe is survived by his two children, Karen McDowell-Washington and her husband Cardos and Rodrick P. McDowell and his fiancé Kristina VanZandt as well as three grandchildren; Imani Marshall, Alonzo Williams, and Mia McDowell. He is predeceased by his brother Roy Lee McDowell.

Relatives and Friends are invited to Roscoe's Life Celebration of Friday, April 21, 2017 from 9:00-9:50 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 714 Dekalb St. Norristown PA, 19401 followed by his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow on Monday, April 24, 2017 at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Rd. Newtown PA, 18940 at 9:00 a.m. (please arrive at the cemetery office by 8:30 a.m.).
