Obituary for Shaelee Tatum Black

January 30, 1997 - January 14, 2018
Pennsylvania | Age 20

On Sunday, January 14, 2018, our beautiful, precious, daughter, Shaelee Tatum Black, age 20, was called home to be with our Heavenly Father. Shaelee was born January 30, 1997 to her loving mother and father, Sharon Thiessen Black and Andrew Black III, at Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown, PA. She was welcomed by her big brother, Andrew Black IV. Shaelee was home educated by her mother due to multiple medical health issues which made life difficult for her, but her strength and determination always led her to success. Starting at a very young age, Shaelee enjoyed playing multiple sports: soccer, softball, field hockey, volleyball, basketball. Her love of playing soccer suddenly ended with a diagnosis of bilateral hip dysplasia and rotated femurs at age 15. Thanks to Dr. Michael Millis of Boston Children's Hospital Shaelee was able to return to her love of softball after one year of multiple, extensive hip surgeries. Within two months of leaving her wheelchair, and with the help of pitching coach and friend, Cheryl Flavin, Shaelee returned to the pitching mound at New Hope-Solebury High School, New Hope-Solebury Township Team, and the Steele Newtown Township Rock Team, earning multiple team and individual awards. Shaelee was an amazing vegetarian cook, she loved photography, she was a member of the Princeton Area Home School Choir for several years, she played classical piano, and became a licensed PA cosmetologist by the age of 18. Shaelee excelled in academics attending Bucks County Community College, Philadelphia University where she had the pleasure to play for the Div. 2 CCA softball team under Coach Cooper for a short time until her hip condition would, once again, take her out of softball but sadly this time it would be permanent. At the time of her death, Shaelee was a Junior at Temple University with a 3.68 GPA. She was also a current EMT student of JeffStat at Thomas Jefferson University. Shaelee planned on attending grad school to become a Physician Assistant in orthopedics in order to help other young athletes return to the sports they love. Shaelee was a strong, intelligent, compassionate, loving, and beautiful person who loved animals, nature, hiking, cooking, photography, being with friends, but especially being with her mom and big brother. If you knew our sweet Shaelee, you were truly blessed to know a wonderful, funny, and caring person. May her beautiful smile forever be in your memory.

Shaelee's Mother, Sharon Thiessen Black and Brother, Andrew Black IV; Grandfather, Werner Thiessen, and the entire Thiessen family; Father, Andy Black III as well as many Aunts, Uncles, and cousins: Kathy and Craig Barker, Ryan and Celina Barker and children, Kyle and Allyson Barker and daughter; William Thiessen, Genevieve and Chuck Rudy, CJ and Melissa Rudy, Angela and Jonathan Richey and children, Wesley and Heather Rudy, Deborah Vilcheck and children; Niels van Berkum, Mylene Enriquez; Rev. David and Helen Simmons, along with the entire Simmons family are devastated and heartbroken to lose our precious Shaelee.

Shaelee's grandmother, Joan Thiessen, and Grandmother, Alice Black, and Grandfather, Andy Black, Jr. along with cousin Thomas Rudy welcomed Shaelee into Heaven.

Although Shaelee's time here was brief, she touched many lives for the better and the love we have for her is endless. My heart will always be tied to yours. Rest in Peace my precious baby girl. I look forward to the day when we will be together again.

A note from Shaelee's mom, "Please don't be afraid to approach me even though I am crumbling in tears; just let me cry. I want to hear of all your memories of my beautiful Shaelee and how she touched your life. I want to laugh. I want to cry. I want to share with you how Shae felt about you and how you touched her life. I know it's difficult to be around someone who's grieving so openly, but know you are helping me when you show me your photos and memories of my beautiful Shaelee."
