Smickley
Sherman H. Smickley of Levittown, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 92.
Sherman was born in Wind Gap, PA on April 10, 1921. He graduated from Pen Argyl H.S. in 1939. He was proud of his military service during WWII where he trained as an airplane mechanic and B-29 flight engineer and this spurred a lifelong fascination with aviation. He met his beloved wife Ruth (nee Blackman) from Amarillo, TX while in the service. They were married on July 19, 1948.
After the war, Sherman studied metallurgical engineering at Lafayette College graduating in 1950. Upon graduation he went to work at Roller Bearing Company of America in Trenton, NJ, staying with them for his entire career. He retired as chief metallurgist in 1983. Sherman was a past chairman for the American Society for Metals Delaware Valley Chapter.
Sherman was an original Levittown homeowner and a charter member of the Faith Reformed Church where he previously served as both an elder and a deacon. Raising his three sons, he was often active with cub scouts and boy scouts. He loved fishing, camping, and traveling the country with his family. He enjoyed the challenge of fixing anything mechanical or electrical and was frequently sought out for his skills in these areas.
Sherman is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Ruth. He is survived by his three sons, James Smickley of Levittown, Robert Smickley (Laurie) of Signal Mountain, TN, and Stephen Smickley (Kristen) of Sewell, NJ. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Beal (Maynard) in Wind Gap, PA.
He will be sadly missed by his five grandchildren, Lynn Stob (Dan), Emily VanDenBerg (Luke), Eric Smickley (Jessica), Sheldon Smickley, and Allyssia Smickley; five great grandchildren, Sophie, Jacob, and Elizabeth Stob, and Annabelle and Charles VanDenBerg; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
