Obituary

Soorsattie Rupnarain passed away peacefully on Monday, June 28, 2021. She was 72.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana, she was the beloved wife to the late Brahaspat Rupnarain, daughter to the late Sookhoo and Kato Ramsarran, and sister to the late Yadram Ramsarran.

Soorsattie is survived by her loving children; Rajendra Rupnarain, Radika Peterkin, Nadira Rupnarain and Eric Rupnarain, as well as her 7 grandchildren, and her 7 siblings.

My mom grew up in the village of Enmore, on the East Coast of Demerara in Guyana. She was 1 of 9 siblings and the oldest daughter. Because of her large family and her parents busy trying to provide for the family, she was tasked with being a mother to her younger siblings. She did an amazing job at being a mother, so when she got married to my late father Brahaspat Rupnarain on 05/28/1966 and became a mother, she was a natural at it.

Before getting married, my grandparents sent my mom to learn sewing, and after getting married, she was a self-employed as a seamstress in the village of Grove. Over the years she became one of the most sought-after seamstresses, with people coming from all over the place to get the apparel sewed. During the Christmas Holiday, there would be a constant line of patrons waiting to get their outs sewed – she never got a break and really never complained.

The family migrated to the US on 02/23/1986 in search of the American Dream. My mom always stressed the importance of education and made sure her 4 children had a good education in order to have a greater chance of succeeding. She made many sacrifices in order for us to go to school, always supporting and encouraging. She never missed a parents/ teacher conference and was there for all of our graduations. She worked full time and retire at age 65 and was really looking forward to retirement and spending some well-deserved time with her family. She adored all her grandchildren and was so fond of Mahendra and Devendra. We really wanted mom to be around for many more years and our prayers were asking God to lengthen her days, but it was not to be.

Mom, you were the most decent, honest, hardworking, humble person I know -there's not another like you. My hope is that one day we will be re-united, but until then your memories will live on and your legacy and inspiration will carry us forward. May your soul rest in peace.

Mom's services were held on Friday, July 2, 2021 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home, 10975 Academy Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154, and again on Saturday, July 3, 2021 from 8:00 AM until her Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at the Grace-Trinity United Church of Christ, 5200 Oxford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19124. Her interment took place at Greenmount Cemetery, Philadelphia.
