Obituary for William Albert Opdyke

November 7, 1968 - October 21, 2016
Pennsylvania | Age 47

On Friday, October 21, 2016, William "Bill" Opdyke passed on to live with the Lord after a courageous battle with melanoma. He was 47 at the time of passing. Survived by his wife Michelle and their four children: Zachary (24), Matthew (20), Michaela (12), and Nicholas (11), as well as his mother, three brothers, and his maternal grandmother, Helen Opdyke.

Bill was born in Trenton, New Jersey to BettyAnn Arteaga on November 7, 1968. He was the eldest of four brothers, Gene, Jerry & Eddie. As a child he enjoyed fishing and trapping with his grandfather along the Delaware River. His favorite time of the year was his annual fishing trip with his family up to Calabogie, Canada. He continued this trip even into his adulthood.

After graduating William Tennant High School in 1986, Bill became a self- made businessman. He began Opdyke Landscaping as a young adult, and loved to get his hands dirty as well as foster good relationships with his clients. Bill married Michelle Whalen and he had the blessing of being able to build their home together in Pipersville, PA.

In 2008, Bill became a member of Local Union 401 Ironworkers, and was well-loved by his brothers. Bill helped to erect many of the buildings in Philadelphia such as the CHOP Center, Sugar House Casino, Comcast Building, as well as many buildings on University of Pennsylvania's and Drexel's campuses. He was a very hardworking man with a strong work ethic. Bill rarely missed a day of work, even when he received his cancer treatments.

Bill was a loving father to his four children. He enjoyed spending time with his children fishing, mountain biking or supporting them in their various sporting events. He helped coach for Lenape Valley Indians Football and always helped to encourage the other children. It brought Bill great joy to be able to mentor the kids. Another long-time passion of Bill's was lifting weights at the gym.

Nothing would make Bill happier than taking a leisurely drive around Bucks County on his Harley Davidson with his wife on a Sunday afternoon. He also loved to restore classic cars, especially his 1969 Firebird. William attended Hilltown Baptist Church and became a believer unto the Lord a few months before passing.

Family and friends are invited to Bill's Life Celebration, Saturday November 5th, from 3-5pm, at Hilltown Baptist Church, 26 Church Rd, Chalfont, PA and to participate in his Memorial Service at 5pm. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for his children's college education can be sent to the Bill Opdyke Foundation, P.O. Box 361, Pipersville, PA 18947.
