Obituary

In Loving Memory of William Ernest Garrett
In the cold bitter winter of 1951 in Philadelphia, PA, God breathed life into a precious bundle of joy. On January 18, God blessed the late Zack and Drucilla Garrett with their first gift from Heaven; William Ernest Garrett. William was affectionately known as "June" to all of his family and friends. June was the oldest of three children, Zack 3rd and Joyce.

June received his formal education in the Philadelphia Public School System. He graduated from Jules E. Mastbaum High School. After graduation he continued his education in engineering. After extensive training he was hired by SEPTA as a motorman engineer for the Market – Frankford EL transit line.

June had another milestone right before he graduated from high school. He met the sunshine of his life, Elizabeth. He could not get enough of her and vice versa. After courting Liz for two years, he was fascinated, and she was smitten; the rest was history. June asked Liz to be his forever love. They took God's hand on January 18, 1973. From this utopia, their three angels were conceived, William Edward, Robert Anthony and Tomeka Lavelle. June had everything he wanted, a beautiful family that he was devoted to.

June worked hard every day to provide for his family. He loved his job and remained a faithful employee for SEPTA for 26 years. Unfortunately, June's health forced him to retire much sooner than he planned.

To know June was to Love him. He had an outgoing personality and loved being with family and friends. However, his favorite moments were spending time with his sweetheart Liz. If they were not in competition playing Nintendo, or listening to oldies, they were cuddled up watching their favorite TV shows. June and Elizabeth loved each other unconditionally. They took their vows seriously. "For better for worst, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, according to God's Holy law, and this was their solemn vow". They had their ups and downs, but their love proved "love does conquer all".
June's resilience battling cancer was remarkable. He would not let the disease defeat him. He fought courageously until the very end. On Monday, September 21, 2020, God looked over His balcony from Heaven and gave His Angel's charge to bring His son back home. He is back home with his loving parents, brother Zack and precious son Robert.

June's imprints of laughter and love are in so many hearts, never to be erased. His memories are affectionately cherished by his devoted wife Elizabeth, son William and daughter Tomeka Powell (Spouse Gregory Sr.) and Sister Joyce Prescott. Three Grandchildren, Gregory, Jr. and Lauren Nicole, both of and Shemire Tamir Walton, Sister-in-law Jacqueline Jones, Brothers-in-laws Howard Gibbs, and Michael Gibbs. Nieces Raina Prescott, Ki-Shawna Gibbs, Kiona Gibbs, of Rowlett,Texas, Anthea McBride (whom he lovingly called My Paris), Jennifer Gibbs. Great Nieces: Brooke Prescott, Anasian McBride, Braelyn McBride, Kaylee Gibbs, Koi Gibbs. Nephew: Leron Gibbs, Great Nephews: Craig "Hobbit" Johnson, Portland, Oregon, and Chayse Gibbs-Moore, Rowlett.
