Obituary for William Gardiner

September 29, 1927 - November 7, 2021
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | Age 94

Beloved Uncle

William Gardiner died on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital.
He was 94 years old. Born in Manhattan N.Y. to William A. and Mary (nee Regan) Gardiner, Bill was a resident of Philadelphia Pa.

Bill grew up in New York City and started working for the New York Central RR a few weeks before he graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1946. He started as a baggageman in Grand Central Terminal, transferred to working in the towers in the metropolitan area first as a leverman and then as an operator. He also worked as a train dispatcher. Later, he moved into the NY Central's data processing department and stayed in that group through the end of the NY Central, Penn Central, and into the Conrail era. He moved to Philadelphia for his job and lived in his home for 50+ years, until his passing. After Bill retired from the railroad, he was called back, worked a while, retired again, and was called back a second time! He was in high demand!

He was a proud US Veteran who served in the Army for several years in the mid 50's.

He had a passion for learning and history. He was a talented photographer and loved taking pictures at special occasions for his family, friends and parish.

Bill was active in the New York Central System Historical Society for many years as a Life Member, and at one time maintained the records of their membership. He was also on the Board of Directors for Home with Honor. He volunteered regularly at events for his church – St. Anselm.

He is survived by his nephew Thomas Gardner, son of Bill's late brother & sister-in-law George & Brenda Gardner. In addition to Thomas, he leaves behind his New York "family" - the Lenihans, his good friend Jim and wife Joan's family - he was Uncle Bill to Cathy, Noreen, David & Judith, their spouses and all of their children. He has many friends and neighbors who will miss him dearly.

Family and friends are invited to attend his life celebration on Sunday November 14, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the John F. Givnish life celebration Home 10975 Academy Rd. Philadelphia.
